How much do AI agents cost? The cost drivers and where to find real numbers

By Tomi, founder of SupaKid Studios · Updated · 4 min read

Short answer

There is no single price. Cost comes from the AI model usage, the tools the agent runs on, the setup work, and someone to manage it. Check the official model pricing pages for usage rates, then compare the total to the hours the agent saves. Scope the job first, price second.

"How much do AI agents cost" has no one answer, and anyone who gives you a flat number without asking what the agent will do is guessing. What you can get is a clear list of what drives the price, where the real numbers live, and a way to compare cost to value. That is this page.

The five things that make up the cost

  1. The model. The AI brain doing the thinking. This is a usage cost.
  2. The harness and tools. Tomi splits an AI employee into three parts: the LLM, the harness that runs it and manages its work, and the tools it uses. The harness and tools can have their own plans or fees.
  3. A computer for the agent. Some agents work on their own cloud computer so they can run without tying up yours. That is a running cost.
  4. Setup. Writing the brief, connecting accounts, testing, setting the handoffs.
  5. Management and review. Someone has to watch quality, fix instructions and approve what goes out.

People often count only the first one and are surprised by the rest. Others count only a monthly subscription and are surprised when the work needs more usage than the plan allows.

Where to find real model numbers

Do not trust a blog's table of prices. They go stale quickly. Use the source.

  • API usage. OpenAI publishes per-token rates in its developer pricing docs. As of November 2026, that page lists GPT-6.1 Sol at $2.00 per 1M input tokens and $10.00 per 1M output tokens, and GPT-6 Astra at $10.00 input and $50.00 output. Check the live page, because these change.
  • Subscription plans. Anthropic lists consumer plans on its Claude pricing page: Pro at $20 a month billed monthly and Max at $100 a month. Its Ultra plan page lists Ultra at $200 a month. Usage limits apply and can change, so check the live page.

A token is a small chunk of text. More text in and out means more tokens. An agent that reads long documents or takes many steps burns more of them. That is why two jobs that look alike can cost very differently.

Why costs surprise people

  • Long context. Loading a big document for every small task adds up.
  • Many steps. An agent that tries, checks and retries uses more.
  • Premium models for easy work. Not every task needs the strongest model.
  • Always-on work. Agents that run all day cost more than ones that run on a schedule.
  • Rework. A vague brief means repeated runs.

Tomi has talked about spending a lot on AI subscriptions and tokens while running multiple teams of AI employees, and about how most people do not need to spend anywhere near that. The lesson is not a number. It is that scale and cost move together, so start with one job.

How to estimate your own cost

  1. Define one job. Use the test in what work to hand to AI first.
  2. Time the human version. How many hours a week does it take now, and who does it?
  3. Run a trial for a week or two. Track the model usage it actually used.
  4. Add setup and review time. Be honest about it.
  5. Compare. Total monthly cost of the agent versus the hours and mistakes it replaces.

If the agent saves you ten hours and the whole cost is smaller than what ten hours of your time or a hire is worth, it is a good trade. If you cannot say what the hours are worth, you are not ready to decide yet.

Comparing quotes

When a vendor or consultant quotes you, ask:

  • What exactly will the agent do, and what is the finished state?
  • Is AI model usage included or billed on top?
  • What happens when usage goes up?
  • Who sets it up, who runs it, who fixes it?
  • Is billing monthly or hourly, and can you stop?
  • What do I approve, and what goes out without me?

How we do it at SupaKid Studios

We do not publish prices, because the right price depends on the job. We scope it on a call. What we can tell you is how the model works. You can hire one agent or a full team, for example an iOS app, sales and marketing, or day-to-day operations. Our studio team sets up, runs and manages the agents. AI is included, so you are not separately paying for model usage. Billing is monthly or hourly by invoice. The client approves anything that goes out. It all starts with a 30-minute call.

That setup exists because of the cost drivers above. Setup, running and review are real work. Putting them in one managed package means you do not have to learn tokens and harnesses to get an outcome. Our managed AI agent team page lays out the options.

What goes wrong

  • Comparing a subscription to a team. A chat plan is not the same as a managed agent that does a job.
  • Ignoring review time. It is a real cost, even if it is your own time.
  • Locking in early. Pilot one job first.
  • Chasing the cheapest model. A cheap model that needs three reruns is not cheap.

If you want a straight answer for your situation, book a 30-minute call with SupaKid Studios. Tell us the job, and we will scope it and give you a plain estimate.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to run an AI agent?

It depends on how much work it does and which model it uses. Model providers publish per-token rates, and consumer plans have flat monthly prices. Add tools, setup and management on top.

Are flat monthly AI plans enough to run an agent?

Sometimes, for personal use. Usage limits apply and depend on the model and how long your tasks are, so heavy agent work can hit them. Check the provider's plan page.

Why can two agents doing similar work cost very different amounts?

Model choice, how much context each task loads, how many steps it takes, and how much a human reviews all change the bill.

What does SupaKid Studios charge?

We scope each job on a call, so we do not publish prices. AI is included, billing is monthly or hourly by invoice, and the first step is a 30-minute call.
